Indonesia U-20 Eyes Stronger Squad with Seven Overseas Talents for AFF U-19 2026

Indonesia's U-20 national team is beginning its preparations for the 2026 AFF U-19 Championship, with head coach Nova Arianto confirming plans to bring in seven diaspora players to strengthen the squad. The move is seen as part of a broader strategy to improve competitiveness ahead of the regional tournament, which will take place in June 2026.

Among the overseas-based players expected to join the team is Matthew Baker, who recently represented Indonesia at the AFC U-17 level. His inclusion highlights the coaching staff's intent to blend domestic talent with international experience, creating a more balanced and dynamic roster for the upcoming competition.

Preparations will officially begin with a training camp on May 10, shortly after the tournament draw scheduled for May 8. The coaching staff believes this timeline will allow enough room to assess opponents and finalize tactical plans before the championship begins. The AFF U-19 tournament itself is set for June 1 to June 14, 2026.

Instead of holding the initial camp in the host city, the team will train in Yogyakarta. According to the coaching staff, the city offers an ideal environment for focused preparation. The squad is expected to relocate to Medan five days before the tournament starts, allowing time to adjust to local conditions.

This preparation plan reflects Indonesia's ambition to perform strongly on home soil. By combining a structured training program with fresh talent from abroad, the U-20 team aims to build momentum and enter the 2026 AFF U-19 Championship as one of the tournament's serious contenders.
