FIFA Grants Amnesty to Nicolás Otamendi Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup Opener

FIFA Grants Amnesty to Nicolás Otamendi Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup Opener

According to Gastón Edul and multiple local media outlets including Doble Amarilla, FIFA has approved a special pardon request submitted by the Argentine Football Association, meaning Nicolás Otamendi’s suspension following his red card has been revoked, allowing him to play in Argentina’s opening World Cup match.

Otamendi was sent off during Argentina’s final South American World Cup qualifier against Ecuador national football team and was originally set to serve a one-match suspension. However, after the Argentine FA submitted an official appeal to FIFA, the governing body ultimately decided to grant amnesty for all suspension-related yellow and red cards accumulated during the qualifiers, aiming to ensure every nation can field its strongest possible squad at the World Cup.

Besides Otamendi, Moisés Caicedo — who was also sent off in the same match — and Akram Afif of Qatar national football team are among the players benefiting from the decision.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee stated that the move was designed to ensure the tournament reaches the highest competitive standard from the opening match onward. In addition, following decisions made during FIFA’s meeting in Vancouver, this World Cup will also introduce two separate yellow-card reset stages during the competition.
