Indonesia U19 Squad Boosted by Seven Overseas Talents Ahead of ASEAN Championship
Indonesia's U19 national team training camp in Yogyakarta has drawn attention with the arrival of seven diaspora players from clubs across Australia, Europe, and South America. The camp is part of the team's preparation for the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, which will take place in Medan from June 1 to 14. Head coach Nova Arianto is using the opportunity to shape a stronger generation of young players capable of competing at a higher Asian level.
The overseas-based players joining the squad include Mathew Baker and Timothy Baker from Australia, Zinadein Ardiansyah and Eizar Tanjung from Sydney FC, Welber Jardim from Brazil, Igor Sanders from the Netherlands, and Amar Brkic from Germany. Most of them have already started training with the team in Yogyakarta, while Mathew Baker is expected to join later when the squad moves to Medan. Their arrival adds international experience and increases competition within the team.
Despite the excitement surrounding the diaspora players, Nova Arianto emphasized that every player will receive equal treatment during the selection process. According to him, all squad members must earn their place through performance and consistency during training. The coaching staff is focused on building a balanced team rather than simply highlighting players from overseas backgrounds.
Training sessions in Yogyakarta have been designed to improve physical condition, tactical understanding, and team chemistry. The coaching staff also plans to organize two friendly matches to assess the players more closely before the tournament begins. The team is scheduled to remain in Yogyakarta until May 28 before traveling to Medan for the final stage of preparation.
For Nova Arianto, the ASEAN U19 Championship is only the beginning of a larger mission. The tournament will serve as an important test ahead of the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers, where competition is expected to become even more demanding. Indonesia could also receive additional reinforcements, as two more diaspora players from the United States and the Netherlands are still being considered to join the squad in the near future.
