Barcelona Reap Unexpected Financial Windfall After Marc Cucurella’s Real Madrid Transfer
Barcelona are set to benefit financially from Marc Cucurella’s high-profile move from Chelsea to Real Madrid, despite the player joining their historic rivals. The transfer, completed in the summer window, has created an indirect advantage for the Catalan club through FIFA’s solidarity payment system.
Real Madrid have secured Cucurella on a long-term deal running until 2032 after agreeing a package worth around €55 million plus performance-related bonuses. The 27-year-old left-back, a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, was briefly linked with a possible return to his former club before ultimately choosing to join their biggest rival.
Because Cucurella spent several formative years in Barcelona’s youth system, the club is entitled to a share of the transfer fee under FIFA regulations. The solidarity mechanism distributes a percentage of international transfer fees to clubs involved in a player’s development between the ages of 12 and 23.
Based on the reported deal value, Barcelona are expected to receive around €1.35 million from the transfer. Other clubs involved in his development, including Espanyol, Getafe, and Brighton, will also receive smaller payments, reflecting the years he spent progressing through different stages of his career.
Although the transfer to Real Madrid may be emotionally difficult for Barcelona supporters, it highlights the long-term financial value of elite youth development. Even years after a player leaves La Masia, the club continues to benefit from FIFA’s system, reinforcing the lasting economic impact of producing top-level talent.
