Community Shield 2026 Moved to Cardiff as Wembley Becomes Unavailable
The 2026 Community Shield will be played away from Wembley Stadium after the venue became unavailable due to a series of concerts by Canadian artist The Weeknd. As a result, the traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season between Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City will take place at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on August 16.
The Principality Stadium, which has a capacity of around 74,000 spectators, is no stranger to English football. It previously hosted the Community Shield from 2001 to 2006 while Wembley underwent redevelopment, making this year's return a familiar setting for the competition after a two-decade absence.
This is not the first time the annual fixture has been relocated. The match has also been staged at alternative venues in recent years, including Villa Park in 2012 and Leicester City's King Power Stadium in 2022, demonstrating the Football Association's flexibility when Wembley is unavailable.
Manchester City have experienced mixed fortunes in Community Shield matches played outside the national stadium, having lifted the trophy at Villa Park before suffering defeat at King Power Stadium a decade later. Arsenal, meanwhile, will be aiming to begin the new campaign by adding another piece of silverware after winning the Premier League title.
Despite the venue change, the Community Shield remains one of the most anticipated fixtures on the English football calendar. The match will serve as the official start of the domestic season, offering both clubs an early opportunity to claim a trophy before the Premier League kicks off later in August.
