Belgium Appoint Mark van Bommel as Head Coach with Euro 2028 Mission
Belgium have officially named former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as their new head coach, handing him a contract that will run through UEFA Euro 2028. The 49-year-old takes charge following the departure of Rudi Garcia after Belgium’s World Cup 2026 campaign ended with a quarterfinal defeat to eventual champions Spain.
Van Bommel is set to officially begin his role on August 15, bringing a wealth of experience from both his playing and coaching career. His appointment reflects Belgium’s ambition to rebuild and remain competitive at the highest level of international football over the coming years.
The Belgian Football Association was particularly impressed by Van Bommel’s coaching achievements with Royal Antwerp. During his successful spell at the club, he guided the team to the Belgian Pro League title, the Belgian Cup, and the Belgian Super Cup, establishing himself as one of the country’s most respected managers.
The new coach is expected to build a disciplined, ambitious squad capable of challenging Europe’s strongest national teams. Belgium’s football leadership believes his international experience and tactical knowledge will help maximize the potential of the talented players already available in the national team setup.
Van Bommel will be supported by an experienced coaching staff featuring Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens, and Reinier Robbemond. Their first major challenge will come in the UEFA Nations League, where Belgium are scheduled to face Italy, France, and Türkiye in a demanding group during September and October.
