Shin Tae-yong Handed One-Year KFA Ban, but Persija Jakarta Remains Unaffected
Shin Tae-yong, the former Indonesia national team coach and current Persija Jakarta manager, has been suspended from football-related activities in South Korea for one year by the Korea Football Association (KFA). The disciplinary action followed an investigation by the KFA Fair Play Committee into allegations of physical and verbal abuse during his spell with Ulsan HD between August and October 2025.
The case stemmed from reports that Shin was involved in an internal incident with defender Jung Seung-hyun and was also accused of verbally mistreating several players. The controversy reportedly contributed to deteriorating morale within the squad, while Ulsan HD struggled on the pitch and faced the threat of relegation before eventually dismissing him in October 2025.
Following his departure, the KFA launched a formal investigation in December 2025. After an eight-month review, the federation concluded that Shin had violated its disciplinary standards and imposed a one-year ban from participating in football activities under South Korean jurisdiction.
Despite the sanction, Shin's role as Persija Jakarta head coach remains unaffected. The restriction applies only to football competitions and activities governed by the KFA, allowing him to continue fulfilling his coaching responsibilities in Indonesia. Having signed a three-year contract with Persija until 2029 in June 2026, he is expected to remain fully involved with the club.
Persija has expressed respect for the KFA's decision while reaffirming its confidence in Shin's leadership. The club continues to focus on preparing for the 2026/27 season with ambitions of winning the domestic league and returning to Asian competition. At the same time, Persija is competing in the 2026 President's Cup, where it opened its Group B campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Persebaya Surabaya.
