UEFA Threatens FIFA Boycott After Rejecting $20 Billion World Cup Investment Plan

UEFA has unanimously rejected FIFA's proposal to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise, a new company valued at $20 billion that would oversee the commercial management of the FIFA World Cup and other international competitions. During an emergency online meeting, all 55 UEFA member associations agreed they would boycott FIFA tournaments if the project moves forward.

European football's governing body argued that the World Cup represents a global sporting legacy rather than a commercial asset that should be opened to private investors. UEFA believes the tournament has been built over decades through the efforts of players, national teams, and supporters, making it a competition that should remain under football's control.

According to reports, FIFA plans to create the new company in partnership with the American banking giant J.P. Morgan Chase. The proposal includes selling up to a 20 percent stake to outside investors, while FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reportedly offered a $10 billion funding package to FIFA's 211 member associations in an effort to secure approval.

UEFA warned that introducing private ownership into FIFA competitions could permanently reshape the governance of world football. The organization fears that future decisions involving international calendars, tournament formats, and the sport's long-term direction could become driven by shareholder interests instead of the needs of the game itself.

The opposition is also spreading beyond Europe. UEFA stated that no European national teams would participate in FIFA competitions unless the proposal is completely withdrawn and FIFA guarantees that private ownership will never become part of its competition structure. CONCACAF has also voiced its opposition, while the African and Oceania confederations are preparing to review the proposal, and FIFPRO has expressed concerns about its potential impact on the future of global football.
