Arne Slot Denies Salary Dispute Rumours After Ending Netherlands Manager Talks

Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that he did hold talks with the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) over the vacant Netherlands national team head coach position, but he denied reports claiming that he withdrew from the selection process due to disagreements over salary and contract length. Slot stated that discussions between the two sides never reached the stage of negotiating contract terms.

Slot responded:
“Over the past few weeks, especially in recent days, the media has published a series of reports regarding the vacancy of the Netherlands national team head coach position. Some reports suggested that I withdrew midway through the process after several rounds of negotiations, with the main disagreements supposedly being related to salary conditions and contract duration.

“These claims are completely inaccurate. Our communication never reached the stage of discussing specific contract details.”

Slot explained that it was perfectly normal to have initial conversations and understand the responsibilities and expectations of such an important role when being approached for a position of this significance.

He said his current career plans are not suited to managing a national team at this stage. Within a week of the initial discussions, he informed the KNVB that he would prefer to continue working in club football.

“At this stage of my career, what I desire most is to be on the training pitch every day, working closely with players and building something together. The structure of international football simply cannot provide that level of daily involvement.

“For that reason, I decided not to continue the discussions, and there were never any negotiations regarding potential contract details.”

Slot also emphasized that the entire communication process with the Dutch FA was smooth and positive.

“I have great respect for the Netherlands national team and the Dutch Football Association. Throughout the week of discussions, the professionalism shown by the KNVB deserves nothing but praise.

“At this moment, I believe club football can still provide me with great value and opportunities as a coach. If one day I have the chance to become the national team manager and represent my country, it would be a tremendous honour. But right now, the timing is simply not right.”
