FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Faces Major Setback as India Withdraws to Face Brazil

The inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 has suffered a significant setback after India decided to withdraw from the tournament, which is scheduled to take place between September and October 2026. The decision comes as India chooses to prioritize a high-profile friendly against Brazil on October 3, leaving organizers with the difficult task of adjusting the competition shortly before its launch.

The All India Football Federation had previously been expected to participate in the tournament, making its withdrawal particularly notable. India's decision is linked to its commitment to the Brazilian Football Confederation and the opportunity to face one of the world's most prominent national teams. The clash with Brazil has therefore taken priority over India's involvement in the new regional competition.

India's departure reduces the number of participating nations from eight to seven. The remaining teams are Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Pakistan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The change also affects Indonesia's group, with the Garuda squad now set to compete in Group A alongside Malaysia and Singapore.
