Niclas Füllkrug Returns to Werder Bremen in Bundesliga Comeback Move

Niclas Füllkrug has officially returned to Werder Bremen, completing a season-long loan move from West Ham United without a purchase option. The transfer comes at no loan fee, while the experienced German striker has reportedly accepted a lower salary to make the move happen. Still under contract with West Ham until 2028, Füllkrug now has the opportunity to revive his Bundesliga career at a club that has played a major role in his journey.

The 33-year-old forward began his football development at Werder Bremen after joining the club's academy at the age of 13. He made his Bundesliga debut in 2012 before spells with Greuther Fürth, Nürnberg and Hannover 96. Bremen eventually brought him back in 2019 for around €6.5 million, beginning a second spell that would become one of the most productive periods of his career despite injuries and difficult moments behind the scenes.

Füllkrug played a crucial role in helping Bremen return to the Bundesliga following their relegation in 2021. He finished as one of the league's joint top scorers during the 2022/23 season, earning his first Germany call-up and attracting interest from Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund paid more than €17 million for him before West Ham later invested around €27 million to bring the striker to England. However, injuries limited his impact, while a subsequent loan spell at AC Milan failed to produce the desired turnaround.

His return gives Werder another experienced option in attack after the club struggled to produce enough goals last season. Füllkrug brings not only his finishing ability but also Bundesliga experience, physical presence and leadership qualities. With Cedric Itten and Salim Musah previously carrying much of the attacking responsibility, his arrival could provide the additional firepower Bremen need to improve their offensive output.

For Füllkrug, the move represents a chance to reconnect with a club where he previously enjoyed some of the finest moments of his career. He returns with considerably more experience after playing for Dortmund, West Ham, AC Milan and the German national team. Werder will hope that his familiarity with the club and Bundesliga allows him to make an immediate impact as the experienced striker begins another chapter in Bremen.
