Harry Kane: “I’m the Best Version of Myself” — Bayern Star Sets Sights on Champions League Glory

After winning his second European Golden Shoe, Harry Kane spoke to FourFourTwo about his current form and shared his thoughts on his career with Bayern Munich and the England national team.

Kane made 51 appearances for Bayern in all competitions last season, scoring 61 goals and providing seven assists. Including his appearances for England, he scored an incredible 73 goals in 65 matches across the year.

Kane believes he is currently at the peak of his career and is capable of playing both as a traditional No. 9 and as a No. 10 who contributes more as a creative playmaker.

“There’s no doubt that last season’s numbers speak for themselves. It was the best season of my career, and I was absolutely the best version of myself.”

Kane has always been comfortable dealing with the physical challenges posed by centre-backs, and he particularly enjoys playing under Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany.

“Since the manager arrived in 2024, he has taken my game to a whole new level. That comes from the way the team plays and our overall attacking and defensive structure. He gives us players, myself included, the freedom to drop deeper to receive the ball and then make late runs into the box.”

“It’s the result of many different factors. I actually played in different positions quite often during my time at Tottenham, especially after Jose Mourinho became manager in 2019. It was quite similar back then. I could drop deeper to get on the ball, and my combination with Son Heung-min was also very effective. The level I’m at now has been built through years of hard work and development.”
Kane also appeared to indirectly put an end to speculation linking him with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

“Looking ahead, the Champions League is an important target for us.

“You have to face the strongest teams in Europe. Paris Saint-Germain are the defending Champions League champions, so the challenge is obvious. Arsenal reached the final last season, while Real Madrid are always highly competitive. If you want to reach the top of Europe, you have to beat a whole host of elite clubs. I’m really looking forward to taking on that challenge again. Last year, we were just one step away from the final. This year, we have to give everything and go one step further.”



Kane’s focus is currently entirely on Bayern and his teammates, with his attention turning back to England’s international fixtures next month. After years of dealing with a packed international schedule, he is already accustomed to the demands.

“Looking back at this summer’s World Cup, as well as the 2018 World Cup, Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, we have consistently gone deep into major tournaments. I’m already used to a tight and demanding schedule. In a way, playing continuously actually suits me. My form and fitness don’t drop off too much, and I can quickly get back into the rhythm of competitive football. That’s where I am at the moment.”

“For England, this summer was a mixture of emotions. Losing to Argentina in the semi-final was certainly disappointing, but winning the third-place playoff was hugely important. The whole team and the fans needed that victory to lift morale. A new cycle has now begun, and everything starts from zero again. We have the Nations League to prepare for, followed by the European Championship qualifiers.”

“Euro 2028 will be held in England, which is undoubtedly a huge source of motivation.

“For now, the focus is on club football. I want to get back into my rhythm as quickly as possible and score as many goals as I can. Before we know it, September will arrive and we’ll be back together with the national team. This year’s camp will last two weeks, and we’ll play four matches, which is different from previous schedules.

“Our first game will be against world champions Spain at Wembley, which is something to look forward to. We need to reflect on this summer’s World Cup, assess what we did well and what we could have done better, and continue improving ourselves in preparation for the European Championship in a few years’ time.”
