Damaged Parc des Princes Forces PSG to Move Rennes Clash
Paris Saint-Germain will begin their Ligue 1 campaign at an unexpected venue after their opening match against Rennes was moved from Parc des Princes to Roazhon Park. The fixture, originally scheduled to take place in Paris on Sunday, August 23, will now be played at Rennes’ home ground while keeping the same date.
The decision was made after the pitch at Parc des Princes suffered serious deterioration following a series of unusually intense heatwaves across the Paris region this summer. The extreme weather accelerated damage to the playing surface, leaving the stadium pitch in unsuitable condition just days before PSG were due to host Rennes.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel carried out an assessment of the surface and determined that the match could not safely be staged at Parc des Princes in its current state. Player safety and the physical integrity of those taking part were considered the main priorities, prompting the authorities to approve the venue change rather than risk playing on a damaged pitch.
The switch means PSG will begin their title campaign away from their usual home stadium before returning to Paris later in the season. Luis Enrique’s side are scheduled to travel to Lille on August 28 for their second league fixture before facing AS Monaco at Parc des Princes on September 4. The club has reportedly identified a solution to replace or restore the pitch ahead of that match.
PSG will enter the new Ligue 1 season looking to recover from a disappointing start after losing 1-0 to RC Lens in the Trophée des Champions last weekend. The change of venue adds another unusual element to their opening fixture, although PSG will still be expected to make a strong start despite having to face Rennes on unfamiliar ground.
