Aston Villa Eye Jean-Philippe Mateta as Contract Dispute Opens Door for Potential Transfer

Aston Villa are reportedly considering a move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as Unai Emery looks to add more depth to his attacking options. The French forward has emerged as a potential target following a major summer reshuffle at Villa Park. With the club preparing for a demanding campaign involving the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic competitions, strengthening the forward line could become an important priority.

Villa have already seen several key players leave during the summer, including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne. Emery has responded by bringing in reinforcements across several areas of the squad, with Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes adding midfield options, while Matteo Ruggeri, Moudou Keba Cisse, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka strengthen the defense. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has also arrived from Parma, but Villa could still look for another attacking option to support Ollie Watkins.

According to reports, Villa have made an initial approach to Palace to explore the possibility of signing Mateta, although no formal bid has been submitted for the 29-year-old striker. Palace are understood to have little interest in selling one of their important attacking players, particularly while Oliver Glasner continues to rely on him. Mateta's contractual situation, however, has created an additional layer of uncertainty around his future at Selhurst Park.

Mateta is currently involved in a dispute over the final year of his Palace contract. His original agreement followed an 18-month loan spell that began in 2021, before he signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the London club. Palace later activated a 12-month extension option in 2024, leaving the striker officially contracted until the end of the 2026/27 season. Mateta has challenged the validity of that final year and has taken the matter to both the Premier League's independent tribunal process and FIFA, although FIFA determined that the issue fell outside its jurisdiction.

Despite the dispute, Mateta remains a Palace player and continues to be involved in first-team football. He started in the club's 2-0 defeat against Everton on August 22 and played 63 minutes before being replaced by Jorgen Strand Larsen. Aston Villa's interest could become more significant if Emery decides that additional firepower is necessary, particularly with the club facing a crowded schedule. For now, Villa must weigh their existing options before deciding whether to make a formal move for the experienced French striker.
