AS Roma Strengthen Their Defense with Leonardo Balerdi Arrival from Marseille

AS Roma have officially completed the signing of Argentine centre-back Leonardo Balerdi from Olympique de Marseille on a season-long loan. The agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent, with the deal reportedly set to become an obligation under certain conditions for an additional €15 million. Roma will initially pay around €1 million for the loan, giving the club another experienced defensive option without committing to the full transfer fee immediately.

The 27-year-old defender completed his medical examination with Roma on Saturday after arriving at Ciampino Airport earlier in the day. His arrival makes Balerdi the club's fifth signing of the summer transfer window, following Santiago Castro from Bologna, Rodrigo Mora from Porto, Konstantinos Koulierakis from Wolfsburg, and Nahuel Molina from Atletico Madrid. The growing list of new arrivals reflects Roma's efforts to reshape their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Balerdi brings considerable experience from his six seasons with Marseille, where he made 200 appearances across all competitions, including 153 matches in Ligue 1. His career has also taken him to Borussia Dortmund and Boca Juniors, giving him experience in both European and South American football. On the international stage, the defender has earned 11 caps for Argentina and remains a player with significant top-level experience.

At Roma, Balerdi will wear the number 26 shirt and is expected to compete for a regular role in the heart of the defense. His ability to operate as a central defender should provide greater depth and competition within the squad, particularly during a demanding season involving multiple competitions.

The signing also gives Roma an opportunity to evaluate Balerdi in their own system before deciding whether to complete a permanent transfer. With his experience in Ligue 1, previous time in Germany, and international background, the Argentine defender could become an important addition as Roma look to build a more reliable defensive unit and strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead.
