​Could Taisei Marukawa Become Indonesia’s First Japanese-Born International?

Taisei Marukawa has recently emerged as a fascinating name in discussions about potential naturalized players for the Indonesian national team. Across Southeast Asia, several countries have welcomed Japanese-born footballers into their squads through citizenship pathways. Singapore and Cambodia have already benefited from this trend, with players such as Kyoga Nakamura and Yodai Ogawa representing their adopted nations after meeting residency requirements. This has sparked speculation about whether Indonesia could follow a similar route.
Marukawa’s case stands out because he has now spent five consecutive years living and playing in Indonesia, which places him within FIFA’s eligibility framework for switching national representation through residency. Under international regulations and Indonesian citizenship law, a player without Indonesian ancestry may qualify if they have resided continuously in the country for at least five years after turning 18. As of May 2026, Marukawa officially meets that benchmark, making him a legitimate option if both citizenship approval and federation interest align.
Since arriving in Indonesia, Marukawa has built a strong reputation in domestic football. His first club was Persebaya Surabaya, where he made an immediate impact during the 2021–2022 season by recording 17 goals and 10 assists in 32 appearances.
