2026 World Cup to Introduce Special “Debut Patch” on Players’ Jerseys for the First Time

According to football kit insider website Footy Headlines, fans will witness a never-before-seen jersey detail at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Under FIFA’s new long-term licensing agreement with sports retail giant Fanatics, every player making their “World Cup debut” during the tournament will wear a special “Debut Patch” on their jersey.
The idea behind this innovation goes far beyond simple visual design. Reports suggest that after the final whistle, these patches will be carefully removed from the match-worn shirts and embedded into limited-edition premium trading cards produced by Fanatics.
This concept has already been widely adopted across major American sports leagues such as MLB and MLS. By doing so, each patch becomes a unique piece of “game-used memorabilia,” significantly increasing the collectible value and historical significance of the trading cards.
Notably, although Topps — the Fanatics-owned brand — will not fully activate its exclusive FIFA trading card partnership until 2031, the “Debut Patch” project will already be piloted during the 2026 World Cup.
Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin confirmed that the early rollout is designed to build up years of authentic match-used materials ahead of the full product launch in 2031. This means that every rising star making their World Cup debut in 2026 will have this unique new detail featured on their jersey.
