Inter Milan Dragged Into Expanding Serie A Referee Scandal Investigation
Inter Milan have reportedly been identified as indirectly connected to the ongoing referee scandal investigation in Italian football. The case, which is being handled by prosecutors in Milan, continues to examine allegations involving referee appointments and possible manipulation within the Serie A officiating system. Although Inter's name has surfaced during the investigation, authorities have not indicated direct wrongdoing by the club at this stage.
The investigation remains focused on former referee appointment chief Gianluca Rocchi and an alleged system known internally as the "door-knocking" practice. Prosecutors are examining whether certain clubs may have benefited from hidden influence regarding referee selections and VAR decisions. Despite growing attention around the case, officials confirmed that no new suspects are expected to be added for the moment.
Several individuals are already under investigation, including former VAR chief Andrea Gervasoni. Authorities are analyzing multiple incidents connected to possible sporting fraud, pressure inside VAR rooms, and suspicious referee management patterns. One of the key concerns involves claims that some clubs were unofficially categorized as either "favored" or "unfavored" within the referee system.
Inter Milan's involvement reportedly emerged during discussions connected to an incident at San Siro on April 2, 2025. However, prosecutors stated that recent examinations and testimonies have not produced enough evidence to significantly alter the direction of the investigation. Club executives, including figures linked to Inter's referee relations department, are also not currently scheduled for further hearings.
Despite the controversy surrounding the case, the investigation still appears far from reaching a final conclusion. Italian football authorities remain under pressure to ensure transparency as concerns over officiating integrity continue to grow across Serie A. For now, Inter Milan remain only indirectly linked to the scandal, while prosecutors continue to focus primarily on the wider referee management structure and the individuals already named in the case.
