Roberto Mancini Turns Down Four Club Offers While Waiting for Italy National Team Return
Roberto Mancini reportedly rejected offers from four different clubs after becoming convinced that he would be appointed as the next head coach of the Italy national team. For weeks, he was widely regarded by Italian media as the leading candidate to return to the Azzurri dugout, even before Antonio Conte emerged as another strong contender.
Mancini's confidence reportedly grew after receiving personal assurances from Giovanni Malagò before the latter officially assumed the presidency of the Italian Football Federation. Believing that a return to the national team was close, the former European Championship-winning coach remained patient and declined other opportunities while waiting for an official decision.
The situation changed when the federation explored different options following Pep Guardiola's decision to reject its approach. Paolo Maldini and Leonardo were said to have shifted their focus away from both Mancini and Conte, eventually favoring Andrea Pirlo as the preferred candidate for the role.
Away from football, Mancini had already decided to leave Qatar regardless of the outcome. His departure came after a dramatic journey from Doha during a period of regional conflict, an experience that reportedly influenced his decision to seek a fresh chapter in his coaching career. A return to Italy was also viewed as a chance to rebuild his reputation after his unexpected resignation from the national team in August 2023.
In recent weeks, Mancini reportedly turned down approaches from Benfica, Beşiktaş, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest because he believed the Italy job was within reach. The uncertainty has now placed Malagò in a difficult position, with the possibility of damaging his relationship with Mancini if the federation ultimately chooses a different direction for the national team's future.
