Manchester City Secure Josko Gvardiol's Future with New Deal Until 2031
Manchester City have strengthened their long-term plans by extending Josko Gvardiol's contract through 2031. Although his previous agreement still had several years remaining, the club chose to reward the Croatian defender with a new five-year deal after his outstanding performances since arriving at the Etihad Stadium.
Gvardiol joined City from RB Leipzig in 2023 for a transfer fee of £77.5 million and has since become one of the team's most dependable defenders. The 24-year-old has made 122 appearances in all competitions, playing a key role in the club's success on both domestic and international stages.
During his time in Manchester, Gvardiol helped City win the Premier League in his debut season before adding the FA Cup and EFL Cup titles in the 2025-26 campaign. His contributions have gone beyond defending, with 13 goals, seven assists, and 32 clean sheets highlighting his all-around impact.
The Croatian international has also established himself as one of City's most consistent defensive performers. Since the 2023-24 season, he has led the squad in interceptions and remained among the club's most effective players in tackles and defensive duels, reinforcing his reputation as one of Europe's top young defenders.
Despite missing four months of the 2025-26 season with a fractured shin, Gvardiol returned to action in May and represented Croatia throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup before their elimination by Portugal in the Round of 32. He now looks ahead to a new chapter under manager Enzo Maresca, with Manchester City's preseason schedule set to include matches against Inter, the K-League All-Stars, Atletico Madrid, and Arsenal in the Community Shield.
