Indonesia Set to Unleash Full-Strength Squad as FIFA-Backed ASEAN Cup Ushers in a New Era
The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to transform regional football by becoming part of the official FIFA International Match Calendar. Unlike previous editions of the ASEAN Championship, participating nations will have a much better chance of selecting their strongest squads because clubs will be required to release players during the tournament window. This marks a significant shift for Southeast Asian football and raises expectations for a more competitive event.
Indonesia stands to benefit more than most teams from the new scheduling. Since the national team's wave of naturalized players began in 2022, many overseas-based footballers have been unavailable for the ASEAN Championship because their clubs were not obligated to let them join the tournament. As a result, Indonesia has rarely competed with its full squad in regional competition.
The same challenge has affected other Southeast Asian nations with large groups of overseas players, including Thailand and the Philippines. Their strongest lineups have typically only appeared during FIFA-recognized competitions such as the World Cup qualifiers and the AFC Asian Cup. With the 2026 ASEAN Cup now taking place during an official FIFA window from September 21 to October 3, those restrictions are expected to disappear.
Indonesia is therefore likely to field one of its most complete squads in recent years. The national team has expanded its talent pool through several naturalized players, although previous regional tournaments still relied heavily on footballers from the domestic league. The new format offers the opportunity for the country's overseas stars to compete together on the regional stage.
The tournament will also introduce a revised competition format, with each team playing three group-stage matches before group winners advance directly to the final. Beyond the regional title, participating nations will benefit from valuable FIFA Matchday opportunities to evaluate their strongest squads. For Indonesia, the competition could provide the clearest indication yet of how the Garuda squad compares with Southeast Asia's top footballing nations.
