Man Utd Urged Not to Repeat McTominay Mistake With Rashford Exit

According to reports from relevant media outlets, Marcus Rashford is still technically a Manchester United player, but he is widely expected to leave the club this summer.

Manchester United have been warned against selling Rashford to a Premier League rival. René Meulensteen, who previously served as an assistant coach to Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, believes United could end up harming themselves if they sell Rashford to a club such as Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs have recently been linked with a £30 million move for the England international, but his future remains uncertain. Barcelona decided not to make his loan move permanent, and no club has yet submitted a serious offer for him.

It is not impossible that Michael Carrick could bring Rashford back into the squad, but the general feeling is that both the player and the club believe a clean separation would be the best outcome for everyone.

If that happens, Meulensteen has urged Manchester United not to sell Rashford to a domestic rival. Asked whether the situation could mirror United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay, who has since excelled at Napoli, he said:

“Would selling Rashford be like selling McTominay? I don’t think people viewed McTominay in the same way they view Rashford. McTominay left because the club wanted to sell him, and then he went on to perform extremely well. People may wonder whether United sold him too soon.

“But selling Rashford to a direct competitor like Arsenal or Chelsea could genuinely hurt you. He is still a player who can change games. Ideally, if Manchester United are going to sell him, they should sell him abroad.”

Meulensteen also suggested that Saudi Arabia or Major League Soccer could be possible destinations for Rashford.

“Saudi Arabia could be an option for Rashford, depending on what he wants. Maybe another major club will come in and he can continue playing in the Champions League. Or perhaps he will go to Saudi Arabia, or maybe MLS. Who knows?”

Meulensteen also urged Carrick and Rashford to have an open conversation to understand the player’s mindset and determine how he could contribute to the team.

“Michael Carrick knows exactly what Rashford is capable of. They need to have an honest conversation and make Rashford understand what the team needs from him.

“Michael Carrick would not want to bring someone back only to create new problems. If everything is clear, he would be happy to reintegrate him into the squad.

“However, United have other players available, and Rashford would not necessarily be guaranteed a starting place every week. The fact that there has still been no final decision suggests that something may still be happening behind the scenes.

“If everyone wants him back, the situation should be resolved quickly.”
