Algeria Part Ways with Vladimir Petkovic Despite Recent World Cup Campaign

Algeria have officially ended their partnership with head coach Vladimir Petkovic after reaching a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. The decision comes as a surprise, especially since the Bosnian manager had recently signed a contract extension that was expected to keep him in charge until 2028.

Petkovic took over the national team in February 2024 and quickly earned the confidence of the Algerian Football Federation through his work with the Desert Foxes. His leadership guided Algeria to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reinforcing expectations that he would oversee the team for the coming years.

Although his tenure has now come to an unexpected conclusion, Petkovic leaves after helping Algeria advance to the Round of 32 at the World Cup. The team progressed as one of the best third-placed finishers before its campaign ended with a defeat against Switzerland in the knockout stage.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed that the separation was made through a mutual agreement, bringing an amicable end to Petkovic's time with the national team. The announcement also marked the departure of his coaching staff, signaling the beginning of a new chapter for the national program.

Algeria must now focus on appointing a new head coach ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September. Drawn into a group with Zambia, Togo, and Burundi, the Desert Foxes will be eager to complete the coaching transition quickly to ensure the team is fully prepared for the upcoming qualification campaign.
