Julián Álvarez Pushes for Barcelona Move as Barça Submit €100 Million Offer to Atlético Madrid

Julián Álvarez publicly expressed his desire to join Barcelona during the World Cup, prompting Barça to submit a €100 million offer.

“Honestly, I don’t know. I think now is not the right time to talk about it, but I also don’t want to hide. I try to be an honest person. I have spoken with people at the club and with everyone I needed to speak to. I believe a transfer is the best option for everyone, and I also want to fulfill my dream.”

Álvarez openly expressed his desire for a move during the World Cup. After Robert Lewandowski’s departure, Barcelona had identified the Argentine forward as their top priority for the striker position. The player’s public comments gave Barça the signal they needed to begin formal transfer operations.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta admitted that the club had submitted a formal €100 million offer to Atlético Madrid, with a clear expiration date. However, the proposal was met only with what Barça considered “noise” from Atlético.

Atlético Madrid’s only official response to Barcelona’s approach was to file complaints with FIFA and the Spanish Football Federation, accusing Barça of negotiating with a contracted player during the protected period.

Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín and president Enrique Cerezo have both made it clear that they have no intention of allowing Álvarez to leave this summer.

Gil Marín warned: “I heard Laporta say that his offer was not open-ended. Our response is also open-ended — we do not want to sell him. We will not accept €100 million, and we would not accept €150 million or even €200 million.”

Diego Simeone also commented this weekend: “The situation is very clear. The club has already made its decision.”

Barcelona responded to Álvarez’s interest by submitting an initial offer and publicly acknowledging their admiration for the player, but in recent weeks they have chosen to remain silent.

Barça understands that the deal is extremely complicated, and every step has been carefully calculated. Sporting director Deco previously traveled to Madrid to meet with Álvarez’s representatives, an encounter that was photographed by the media, but beyond that, Barcelona has avoided becoming involved in public disputes or verbal battles.

However, after Álvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave Atlético on Monday, Barcelona’s internal calendar had already marked August 10 as a key date — the day the Argentine forward would return to Atlético training.

Álvarez will begin his pre-season preparations, undergoing routine medical examinations and physical tests. The attention surrounding the striker is enormous.

Unless a major incident occurs, Álvarez is expected to behave professionally and will not take extreme measures such as refusing to train. However, he is expected to first meet with Simeone this week before speaking with the club’s management, in an attempt to clarify the situation and once again emphasize his desire to leave Atlético and join Barcelona — the same wish he expressed around six weeks ago.

His only desire is to wear the Barcelona shirt.

Barcelona acknowledges that completing the deal will be extremely difficult. Atlético have maintained a firm stance so far, but Barça believe that if Álvarez privately reiterates his transfer request, Atlético’s hierarchy may reconsider and a negotiation window could open.

If that happens, Barcelona will prepare a new offer in an attempt to sign their top attacking target of the summer.

Deco’s work during this transfer window has shown that he is highly effective operating behind the scenes. He previously completed deals such as the rapid and low-profile arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, as well as Ronald Araújo’s loan move to Liverpool.

Given the many obstacles created by Atlético Madrid, Barcelona are also preparing alternative options. However, they will not activate any backup plans until Álvarez’s situation is fully assessed.
