Marcus Rashford Returns to Manchester United with New No. 14 Shirt

Marcus Rashford is set to return to Manchester United wearing a new shirt number after spending last season on loan at Barcelona. The 28-year-old forward will switch from the No. 10 shirt, which has now been assigned to new signing Matheus Cunha, and is expected to take the vacant No. 14 instead.

Rashford has already joined Manchester United's preseason tour in Northern Europe and could feature against Leeds United at Croke Park in Dublin. His return marks a fresh chapter after a year away from Old Trafford, with two years still remaining on his current contract and plenty to prove following a difficult period at the club.

The decision to wear No. 14 is particularly interesting because it was also Rashford's shirt number during his time at Barcelona. Although the No. 9 shirt is available at United, he has reportedly opted for 14, ending a seven-year association with the No. 10 shirt. The number has previously been worn by notable players including Andrei Kanchelskis, Jordi Cruyff, Alan Smith, Javier Hernandez, Jesse Lingard, and Christian Eriksen.

Rashford could still have an important role to play under Manchester United's new setup, especially with the squad lacking a natural specialist on the left wing. Cunha is more comfortable in attacking midfield or central areas, while Patrick Dorgu is still adapting after primarily playing as a left-back. Rashford's experience and pace could therefore give United another attacking option.

Despite not being a guaranteed starter at Barcelona, Rashford contributed 28 goals and assists across all competitions last season. He also showed his scoring ability at United during the 2022/23 campaign, when he netted 30 goals. With limited time remaining in the transfer window, Rashford now has an opportunity to revive his career at Old Trafford and fight his way back into Manchester United's plans.
