Real Madrid’s €140m Gamble: Diomande Faces Pressure to Succeed Where €100m Stars Failed

According to Marca, Ousmane Diomande is set to join Real Madrid for a fee that could reach €140 million, making him one of the most expensive signings in La Liga history. Before him, five other €100m-plus players — Dembélé, Coutinho, João Félix, Hazard and Griezmann — all failed to fully justify their price tags in Spain, leaving the Ivorian forward with the pressure of breaking La Liga’s “big-money signing curse.”

Reports state that Yan Diomande will move to Real Madrid for a transfer fee of up to €140 million, placing him among the most expensive signings ever made by a La Liga club.

However, the previous five record-breaking transfers in Spanish football — Ousmane Dembélé, Philippe Coutinho, João Félix, Eden Hazard and Antoine Griezmann — all failed to deliver performances matching their enormous fees, casting some doubt over Diomande’s future at Real Madrid.

Dembélé (€148 million) joined Barcelona as a replacement for Neymar after the Brazilian’s departure. However, persistent injuries prevented him from finding consistency. João Félix (€127.2 million) arrived at Atlético Madrid as one of world football’s brightest young talents, but he never managed to fully express his ability under Diego Simeone. His relationship with the coach gradually deteriorated, leading to loan spells at Chelsea and Barcelona. Ultimately, he left Atlético without ever justifying his huge transfer fee.

Eden Hazard (€120.8 million) experienced what is considered one of Real Madrid’s biggest transfer disappointments in recent years. Injuries plagued his entire spell at the Bernabéu. Across four seasons, he scored only seven goals before retiring early, a dramatic contrast to the superstar form he displayed at Chelsea.

Antoine Griezmann (€120 million) joined Barcelona as a World Cup winner and Ballon d’Or runner-up. However, he was never able to consistently perform in his ideal position. While his statistics were respectable, they fell well short of expectations given Barcelona’s enormous investment. It was only after returning to Atlético Madrid that he rediscovered his best form.
