Portugal Takes Center Stage as Four Coaches Lead Indonesia's Super League

The 2026/2027 BRI Super League is set to begin in September, with all 18 participating clubs working to finalize their squads and tactical plans. One of the most notable aspects of the new season is the growing presence of foreign coaches, particularly those from Portugal. Four Portuguese tacticians will take charge of Super League clubs, making Portugal the country with the largest coaching contingent in the competition.

Bernardo Tavares, Mauro Jeronimo, Ze Gomes, and Mario Lemos will represent Portugal when the new campaign begins. Tavares will continue his role at Persebaya Surabaya, while Ze Gomes remains in charge of Madura United. Mario Lemos is also staying at Persijap Jepara, meaning three of the four Portuguese coaches already have experience managing their respective clubs and understand the demands of Indonesian football.

The only newcomer is Mauro Jeronimo, who has been appointed by Borneo FC. His arrival adds a fresh Portuguese influence to the league after previous experience with Benfica's youth setup and clubs in Vietnam. With different backgrounds and coaching philosophies, the four Portuguese managers could bring varied tactical approaches to the competition while further strengthening Portugal's reputation in Indonesian football.

Portugal will face strong competition in terms of foreign coaching representation, with Brazil and the Netherlands each providing three managers. Brazil will be represented by Marcos Santos at Arema FC, Fabio Lefundes at Persita Tangerang, and Osmar Loss at Dewa United. Meanwhile, Johnny Jansen, Jean-Paul van Gastel, and Pieter Huistra will lead Bali United, PSIM Yogyakarta, and PSS Sleman respectively. Several clubs have also retained their coaches from the previous campaign, while Bhayangkara FC has yet to finalize its head coach.

With such a diverse group of managers, the battle on the sidelines could become one of the most interesting storylines of the 2026/2027 Super League season. The four Portuguese coaches will be under particular scrutiny as they attempt to translate their experience and tactical ideas into results.
