Chelsea Complete £16.3m Deal for Pep Chavarria to Replace Cucurella
Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano as they move to strengthen the left-back position ahead of the new season. The Premier League club announced the arrival of the Spanish defender on Wednesday, August 12, following the departure of Marc Cucurella earlier in the summer transfer window.
Chavarria has signed a five-year contract with Chelsea after the deal was reportedly worth £16.3 million, or around €19 million. The 28-year-old is expected to fill the role left by Cucurella, who completed a move to Real Madrid at the beginning of the transfer window.
The Spanish defender leaves Rayo Vallecano after four seasons with the club, during which he made 125 appearances. His final match came in last season's Conference League final against Crystal Palace, bringing an end to an impressive spell in Madrid before his move to Stamford Bridge.
Chavarria has established himself as an influential attacking and defensive full-back during his time at Vallecano. Since making his debut for the club, he recorded eight assists, the highest total among Vallecano defenders. He also ranked second for chances created with 99 and third for interceptions with 83.
His defensive numbers further highlight the experience he brings to Chelsea. Chavarria ranked fourth among Vallecano defenders for duels won with 388 and third for successful tackles with 109. With a long-term contract now secured, Chelsea will hope his combination of defensive reliability and attacking contribution can help strengthen the team on the left flank.
