From Premier League Champions to League One: Leicester City Put Up for Sale

Leicester City have officially been placed on the market after King Power decided to sell the club following a dramatic decline that has taken the former Premier League champions down to League One. After 16 years of ownership, the Thai company has reportedly set its sights on a valuation of more than £200 million as it seeks a new owner for one of English football's most remarkable success stories.

King Power has appointed US investment bank Citigroup to oversee the sale, with potential investors receiving a presentation under the project name Project Lineup. The package includes Leicester's men's and women's teams, the 32,000-capacity King Power Stadium, and the Seagrave training complex. The club's physical assets are valued at more than £200 million, with the training facility alone having cost around £121 million when it opened in 2020.

The sale comes after a turbulent period both on and off the pitch. Leicester are now preparing for life in the third tier despite once reaching the summit of English football. The club's financial position has also become a major concern, with losses exceeding £180 million between 2023 and 2025 and a bank loan of around £103.6 million recorded in the 2025 accounts. Despite those difficulties, projections indicate that the club could generate more than £97 million in revenue during the 2026 financial year.

King Power's decision also comes as its wider business operations in Thailand face economic challenges. The Srivaddhanaprabha family took control of Leicester in 2010 for approximately £35 million and transformed the club from a Championship side into a global football success. Under their ownership, Leicester achieved an extraordinary Premier League title triumph before adding the FA Cup and League Cup to their trophy cabinet.

The contrast between those achievements and Leicester's current situation is striking. Two consecutive relegations have sent the club from the Championship to League One, while growing frustration among supporters has led to protests outside the stadium. With King Power now seeking a buyer, Leicester face the enormous task of rebuilding their footballing and financial foundations while hoping a new ownership era can eventually restore the club to the level it once reached.
