Luke Vickery Rejects England Move as Indonesia Debut Becomes His Main Focus

Luke Vickery has decided to remain in Australia despite receiving interest from English League One club Peterborough United. The 20-year-old winger will continue his development with Macarthur FC, believing that staying in the A-League is the right step for his career at this stage.
Vickery attracted attention from Peterborough after a promising campaign with Macarthur. The Hawaii-born winger scored seven goals and provided three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions last season. He is still under contract with Macarthur until 2028 and is now expected to remain with the club for the 2026/2027 season.
The decision also gives Vickery more time to focus on his international ambitions with Indonesia. He completed the naturalization process in July 2026, but his long-awaited debut for the Garuda was delayed after Macarthur declined to release him for the 2026 ASEAN Championship. The situation was disappointing for Indonesia head coach John Herdman, who had hoped the young winger could gain valuable tournament experience.
Vickery now has another potential opportunity to make his Indonesia debut during the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, scheduled for September 24 to October 4. Because the tournament falls within a FIFA international window, clubs are required to release players when they receive an official national-team call-up.
For now, Vickery’s immediate future remains tied to Macarthur, while his international prospects depend on Herdman’s squad selection. By turning down a move to England and staying in the A-League, the young winger appears to be prioritizing regular development and the chance to establish himself with Indonesia before considering another move abroad.
