Ronaldo Ends Scoring Drought with Brace as Portugal Thrash Uzbekistan 5-0 to Top Group K

Cristiano Ronaldo wrote another chapter in football history at NRG Stadium in Houston, scoring twice as Portugal demolished Uzbekistan 5-0 in Group K. The Portuguese captain ended a ten-match international tournament drought — spanning five World Cups and five European Championships — and became the first player ever to score at six different World Cups. At 41 years and 138 days old, Ronaldo also became the second-oldest scorer in World Cup history, behind only Cameroon legend Roger Milla, who netted at 42 years and 39 days in 1994. Portugal lead Group K on four points, with Colombia second on three. DR Congo sit third on one point, and Uzbekistan bottom with none.
Ronaldo Breaks the Drought
Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, darting to the near post to convert a low cross from Cancelo. He doubled his tally in the 39th minute, latching onto a through ball from Bruno Fernandes and finishing with a composed low shot from a tight angle. The brace ended a prolonged barren run in major tournaments and extended his own record as the all-time top scorer in Portugal's World Cup history, surpassing Eusébio.

Mendes Free Kick and Nematov Own Goal
Nuno Mendes added a stunning direct free kick in the 17th minute to make it 2-0 before halftime. Early in the second half, a Bruno Fernandes corner from the right caused chaos in the Uzbekistan box, with goalkeeper Nematov inadvertently palming the ball into his own net to give Portugal a 4-0 lead.

Disallowed Goal and Late Leão Finish
Uzbekistan had a brief moment of hope in the 30th minute when Ganyev fired home from outside the box, but VAR ruled that a teammate had fouled Cancelo in the build-up and the goal was chalked off. Substitute Leão rounded off the scoring in the 87th minute, latching onto a defensive error to fire home from close range.
Group K Standings
Portugal lead on four points. Colombia are second on three points ahead of their second fixture. DR Congo sit third on one point, with Uzbekistan yet to open their account at the bottom of the group.
