New AFC Rule Shuts Door on Indonesia U-23's Asian Games 2026 Dream

The Indonesia U-23 national team will not take part in the Asian Games 2026 after a new eligibility regulation effectively removes their chance to qualify. The decision was confirmed by Indonesian officials following updates made by tournament organizers in coordination with the Asian Football Confederation and other governing bodies.

Under the revised system, men's football at the Asian Games will only feature 16 teams. Participation will be limited to nations that qualify for the final stage of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2026, which is now used as the sole pathway to the tournament. This change significantly reduces the number of competing teams compared to previous editions.

Because Indonesia failed to reach the final round of the U-23 Asian Cup qualification, the team automatically lost its eligibility for the Asian Games. Indonesian Sports Minister and PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir acknowledged that the exclusion was purely due to the updated regulation rather than on-field performance issues.

The decision has drawn criticism from Indonesia's Olympic committee, which argues that the new format removes the traditional qualification pathway. The chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, Raja Sapta Oktohari, has formally expressed objections, stating that the change limits fair opportunity for many nations to compete.

Historically, Indonesia has been a regular participant in the Asian Games football tournament, appearing in multiple editions and achieving its best result in 1958 with a bronze medal. Alongside Indonesia's absence, only Vietnam and Thailand from Southeast Asia will compete in the men's football event in 2026, leaving a noticeable gap in regional representation and removing a major international agenda for Indonesia's U-23 squad in that year.
