Pulisic: The U.S. team is strong, and playing at home in the World Cup is our greatest motivation

U.S. national team captain and AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic gave an exclusive interview to Reuters, discussing the team’s World Cup ambitions, the excitement of playing on home soil, and the expectations surrounding the squad.

On the strength of the U.S. team
Pulisic: “Look at the teammates we have playing in top European leagues—they’re performing well at their clubs. I think we definitely have a very strong squad, with good depth as well. There are multiple players who can step in at every position. It’s a very strong team.”

On playing a home World Cup
Pulisic: “The World Cup itself is already something that gets your blood pumping, but having it in the United States, with my family and closest friends there, is a dream come true. I know the atmosphere in the stadiums will be incredible. We want to take full advantage of that and turn it into motivation, doing everything we can to make the American people proud.”

On his sense of belonging to the country
Pulisic: “Representing the United States and wearing this badge is never something I take lightly. I’ve been playing for my country since I was 17… I’m extremely proud to be American and grateful for everything this country has given me. I just want to give back and make the fans proud.”

On handling external pressure
“To be honest, I completely ignore it. I don’t pay much attention to that. I focus on what I can do, how I can help the team, and how I can contribute to winning. I want to show my commitment through my daily training and the way I work every day, and set an example. I stay focused on doing my job. If I can inspire people along the way, that’s great—it motivates me too, and I hope I can do that. But I don’t feel any pressure that I have to.”
