Eight Naturalized Players Who Never Earned a Call-Up to Indonesia's National Team
Since 2010, PSSI has actively pursued a naturalization program to strengthen Indonesia national football team. The initiative brought in a wave of foreign-born and heritage players willing to change citizenship in hopes of representing the country. While some became key figures, others found that obtaining Indonesian nationality did not automatically translate into a place in the national squad.
A number of these players saw their international ambitions stall for different reasons, with age being one of the most common obstacles. Striker Herman Dzumafo Epandi, for example, built a strong reputation in domestic competitions thanks to his physical presence and goal-scoring instincts. However, by the time he officially became an Indonesian citizen in 2017, his chances of breaking into the national setup had already diminished.
Silvio Escobar faced a similar fate. The Paraguay-born forward gained Indonesian citizenship through marriage in 2018 and performed well in Liga 1, yet he never managed to fit into any national team coach's plans. Guy Junior, who had a long and productive career in Indonesia and even contributed to club success, also fell short of making the leap to the international level despite his consistency.
Other names struggled due to limited exposure or intense competition. Charles Orock, who spent much of his career in lower divisions, never entered serious consideration. Meanwhile, defenders like OK John, Zoubairou Garba, and Mohammadou Al Hadji showed solid performances at club level but were unable to stand out in a crowded defensive pool within the national team structure.
Fabiano Beltrame perhaps stands as the most recognizable case. A highly respected and experienced defender in Indonesian football, he completed his naturalization process later in his career. Despite his leadership and defensive qualities, timing worked against him, and he never received a call-up. Their stories highlight a recurring reality: even with commitment and citizenship, earning a place in the national team remains a highly competitive and uncertain journey.
