Fiorentina and Atalanta Lead Serie A's Financial Revolution as New Study Reveals Hidden Strengths

Modern football success is no longer measured only by trophies and league standings. Financial discipline, smart recruitment, and tactical efficiency have become equally important in determining how clubs compete at the highest level. A recent report from PLAIER and the University of St. Gallen highlighted how these factors shaped the 2024/2025 season across 226 clubs from 14 different leagues.

Serie A received special attention in the study because of the way several Italian clubs managed to remain competitive while maintaining financial stability. Surprisingly, traditional giants such as Inter and Juventus were not considered the league's strongest examples in this area. Instead, Fiorentina, Atalanta, and Napoli emerged as the three most financially balanced clubs in Italy.

Fiorentina ranked first after recording an impressive equity ratio of 72 percent during the season. The Florence-based club was praised for maintaining a healthy financial structure while continuing to compete effectively on the pitch. Atalanta followed closely behind, with Napoli securing the third position thanks to their ability to balance sporting ambitions with sustainable management.

The report also examined broader aspects of club operations, including squad quality, coaching efficiency, transfer strategies, and the effectiveness of sporting directors. Como attracted positive attention despite being a newly promoted side, as the club was considered one of the most efficient organizations in Serie A due to its ability to achieve competitive performances with limited resources.

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini was recognized as the most efficient coach in Serie A for the 2024/2025 season. His tactical decisions and player management were viewed as key reasons behind Atalanta's consistency over recent years. On the other hand, Monza and AC Milan received criticism for poor coaching efficiency, with several managers struggling to maximize squad potential and produce consistent results throughout the campaign.
