Dick Advocaat Returns to Curacao Ahead of Historic 2026 World Cup Campaign

Dick Advocaat has officially returned as head coach of the Curaçao national football team in a surprising move announced by the Curaçao Football Federation. The experienced Dutch manager had stepped down earlier this year for family reasons after helping the nation qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. His comeback now gives Curaçao renewed optimism ahead of their historic appearance at the 2026 tournament.

Advocaat originally left the role in February to return to the Netherlands and focus on his daughter's health. During his absence, former Dutch coach Fred Rutten took over the national team setup. However, recent reports suggested that Advocaat's family situation had improved, opening the possibility for a return to the dugout before the World Cup begins.

The decision to reappoint Advocaat gained strong support from many players within the squad, who reportedly wanted the veteran coach back in charge. Curaçao Football Federation president Gilbert Martina insisted the federation made the decision independently despite outside pressure and growing public speculation surrounding the coaching situation.

Rutten eventually stepped down from the position after a difficult spell in charge. Curaçao struggled in recent friendly matches, including defeats against China national football team and Australia national soccer team, which raised concerns ahead of the World Cup. Rutten reportedly chose to leave in order to maintain harmony between the squad and coaching staff during such an important period for the national team.

Before returning to Curaçao, Advocaat had been working as a special advisor to Robin van Persie at Feyenoord. Now, the 78-year-old coach is preparing for another remarkable chapter in his long career and could become the oldest manager in World Cup history when Curaçao face Germany national football team in their opening Group E match next month.
