Indonesia Poised for Strong AFF Cup 2026 Campaign with Key Advantages on Their Side

Indonesia head into the 2026 AFF Cup with growing confidence after securing several advantages ahead of the regional tournament, which runs from July 24 to August 26. The national team has enjoyed an extended preparation period and also benefits from a favorable group-stage schedule, giving the coaching staff more time to fine-tune the squad before their opening match.

Head coach John Herdman launched the team's training camp in Bali on July 5, allowing players to build chemistry and improve tactical understanding over several weeks. The camp initially featured 50 players before being divided into two phases, creating a competitive environment as the coaching staff evaluated the squad ahead of the tournament.

Although many overseas-based players were unable to join from the start, Indonesia still possess a talented roster featuring several experienced naturalized players. Ragnar Oratmangoen, Thom Haye, Ivar Jenner, Jordi Amat, Shayne Pattynama, and Sandy Walsh remain important figures, while Mitchell Baker and Marselino Ferdinan are also expected to strengthen the team.

Another major advantage comes from Indonesia's fixture schedule. Unlike the other Group A teams, the Garuda will not play on the tournament's opening matchday. Their first game is scheduled for July 27 against Cambodia at Pakansari Stadium, giving the team additional preparation time while allowing the coaching staff to closely observe their group rivals in action.

Watching Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste compete before entering the tournament could provide valuable tactical insights for Herdman and his staff.
