Paul Pogba Leaves Monaco as Short-Lived Ligue 1 Comeback Comes to an End

Paul Pogba has officially left AS Monaco after both sides agreed to terminate his contract one year earlier than originally planned. The decision comes before the start of the new Ligue 1 season, leaving the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder available as a free agent and facing another important crossroads in his career.

Pogba joined Monaco last summer as he looked to rebuild his career after a lengthy suspension kept him away from competitive football. His return to the pitch was highly anticipated, but his first season in the principality proved difficult. He made only six appearances during the 2025-26 campaign and struggled to secure a regular place in the team.

The early end to his Monaco spell follows a period in which the expectations surrounding his return were only partly fulfilled. Pogba had been contracted until next summer, but the club and player ultimately decided that separating early was the best solution. His departure also marks the end of his first sustained return to professional football since his final competitive appearance for Juventus in 2023.

The midfielder's career has already included major achievements with Juventus and Manchester United, along with a World Cup triumph with France in 2018. His career was disrupted after he tested positive for DHEA in 2024, initially receiving a four-year ban before the punishment was reduced to 18 months following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Monaco later provided him with an opportunity to restart his career.

Although his time on the pitch was limited, Pogba's presence was still valued within the Monaco squad, particularly for the influence he had on younger players. His professionalism and experience were regarded as important contributions inside the dressing room. Now back on the free-agent market, Pogba must decide what comes next as he looks for another opportunity to continue his professional career.
