Santiago Gimenez Heads to Porto in €20 Million Deal as Milan Chapter Ends

AC Milan have completed Santiago Gimenez's move to FC Porto in a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy for a total package worth €20 million. The transfer brings an end to a difficult period for the Mexico international in Italy, with Porto offering him an opportunity to revive his career and regain his confidence after struggling to establish himself at San Siro.

Gimenez had been informed that he was no longer part of Ruben Amorim's plans for the new season, making a departure increasingly likely. Porto quickly emerged as his preferred destination, particularly because head coach Francesco Farioli has long admired the striker from their time working in the Eredivisie. Despite Gimenez's clear preference, negotiations between the clubs took time as they worked to settle the structure and conditions of the transfer.

The breakthrough came when the two sides agreed to change the purchase option into an obligation, with the clause linked to the number of appearances Gimenez makes for Porto. There will be no loan fee involved, while the permanent transfer is valued at €18 million plus a further €2 million in potential bonuses. The agreement eventually allowed Milan to secure a clear exit for a player who had arrived with high expectations.

Milan had invested more than €30 million to sign Gimenez from Feyenoord in January 2025. His early performances offered plenty of encouragement, but his progress was disrupted by a series of injuries, including an ankle operation. His difficulties continued during the 2026 World Cup, where Mexico were eliminated in the round of 16, further highlighting the need for the striker to find a fresh environment.

Gimenez leaves Milan with seven goals and six assists from 37 competitive appearances. While those numbers fell short of the expectations surrounding his arrival, the move to Porto gives the 25-year-old another chance to rebuild his reputation. With a club that wanted him and a coach who has admired his qualities for years, Portugal could provide the ideal setting for Gimenez to rediscover his best form and begin an important new chapter in his career.
