James Rodriguez Nears Surprise Serie B Move to Reunite with Alessandro Nesta
James Rodriguez is reportedly closing in on a surprising move to Serie B side Avellino, where he could work under former Italy and AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta. The 35-year-old Colombian playmaker is said to have held detailed discussions with Nesta, with negotiations now believed to be at an advanced stage and a potential agreement reportedly close.
Rodriguez is currently a free agent after leaving Minnesota United in MLS. The experienced midfielder had been preparing for the 2026 World Cup with Colombia, making the tournament an important chapter in the later stages of his international career. His availability has now opened the door to a new challenge in European football.
At the 2026 World Cup, Rodriguez featured in all five of Colombia’s matches before their campaign ended against Switzerland in the last 16 following a penalty shootout. With 131 international appearances, he is Colombia’s most-capped player. He has also scored 31 goals for his country, placing him behind only Radamel Falcao on the national scoring list.
Rodriguez has enjoyed a remarkable club career, representing Porto, Monaco, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Everton, Olympiacos and Sao Paulo. A move to Avellino would give him his first experience of Italian football and add another chapter to a career that has included two Champions League titles and the 2014 World Cup Golden Boot.
Avellino have made a positive start to the 2026/27 Serie B campaign, sitting fifth after three matches with two victories and one defeat. If the deal goes through, Rodriguez would bring considerable experience and creativity to Nesta’s squad as the club looks to challenge for a stronger position in Italy’s second tier.
