English media: Arne Slot’s position remains secure, and he is expected to stay on as Liverpool manager next season

Liverpool have no plans to review Arne Slot’s position at the end of the season, with the Dutch coach currently under no pressure to lose his job.

Pressure on Slot has continued to grow this season. After guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut 2024/25 campaign, the Reds currently sit fourth in the table with two matches remaining.

Slot made an instant impact at Anfield last year by winning the league, but things have not gone according to plan this season despite the club spending more than £400 million on new signings.

Injuries to marquee arrivals Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitiké have negatively affected the team, while Florian Wirtz needed time to adapt to the intensity of the Premier League. In addition, Slot was involved in a public disagreement with Mohamed Salah, who has struggled to meet the sky-high expectations placed upon him.

Overall, it has been a disappointing campaign. However, Liverpool only need two points from their remaining matches to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League — the minimum target set by the Anfield hierarchy.

Despite the underwhelming season, owners Fenway Sports Group have no intention of reviewing Slot’s future, and the Dutchman is expected to remain in charge heading into the 2026/27 season.

Senior football journalist Ben Jacobs told GiveMeSport:
“I don’t think the rumours about Liverpool reassessing things in the summer are really connected to Slot’s future.
“From Liverpool’s side, the message has been very clear for quite some time: Liverpool and Fenway Sports Group support Slot, and they have major plans for the summer transfer window. Sources believe the idea that they will carry out a review at the end of the season and potentially change course has been overstated.
“What could realistically change between now and the end of the season? Liverpool are very likely to qualify for the Champions League, which is the best outcome they can now achieve, and that situation has been clear for a while. Any review therefore doesn’t need to wait until the summer. There has been constant dialogue and feedback internally, and Slot is part of the summer plans. If Fenway and Liverpool’s leadership suddenly changed their minds at the end of the season, it would be a major and unexpected turnaround.”
Jacobs also revealed that Fenway view Liverpool’s struggles this season as being caused by “mitigating circumstances.”

He added:
“One of the main reasons Slot continues to receive support is because there have been circumstances this season that can reasonably be viewed as mitigating factors.
“Obviously, the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva during the summer was heartbreaking. Beyond that, the large-scale squad overhaul — with the arrivals of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Wirtz, Ekitiké and Isak — also created challenges.
“Even with injuries forcing players in and out of the lineup, around 50 percent of the starting XI has consisted of relatively new or completely new signings, and that is naturally difficult.
“Salah was also unhappy at the beginning of the season, which became another factor, so Liverpool simply never found any real rhythm.
“But Liverpool are slowly rebuilding, and there is a widespread feeling that greater stability and chemistry between these new signings — as well as with two potential attacking additions — could make a huge difference.
“Liverpool want to continue with Slot, and they have not forgotten that he won the Premier League title in his first season.
“I know some Liverpool fans argue that it was the legacy left behind by Jürgen Klopp, and many supporters currently do not back Slot, but Fenway do not see it that way. That is why, despite the rumours, there have still been no talks with Xabi Alonso.”
