UEFA Slaps Atletico Madrid With Heavy Fine After Champions League Incident Against Arsenal

Atletico Madrid were reportedly hit with a significant financial penalty by UEFA following incidents during their Champions League semifinal clash against Arsenal. Diego Simeone's side eventually crashed out of the competition after losing to the Premier League club over two legs.

Reports revealed that UEFA fined Atletico around £130,000 after supporters threw toilet paper rolls onto the pitch before the first-leg match at Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium. Fans carried out the display to build an intense atmosphere ahead of kickoff, but the act was later judged as a breach of UEFA regulations.

European football authorities classified the incident as supporters throwing objects onto the field, leading to disciplinary action against the Spanish club. The punishment added another frustrating chapter to Atletico's disappointing European campaign this season.

The semifinal itself was closely contested in the opening leg. Viktor Gyokeres gave Arsenal the lead from the penalty spot before Julian Alvarez equalized for Atletico, also through a penalty. However, Arsenal secured qualification in the second leg in London thanks to a first-half winner from Bukayo Saka at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal were also involved in a separate UEFA disciplinary case earlier in the knockout rounds. Their supporters faced punishment after allegedly setting off flares before a draw against Bayer Leverkusen. UEFA fined the English club a smaller amount for the incident, continuing its strict stance on crowd behavior during European competitions.
