FC Twente Frustrated as Mees Hilgers Misses Training Without Notice Ahead of New Season

Tensions have surfaced at FC Twente after defender Mees Hilgers failed to attend the opening sessions of the club’s pre-season training without providing any explanation. The situation has drawn attention in the Netherlands as the club prepares for the upcoming campaign in the Eredivisie.
According to Dutch media reports, Hilgers was absent from two consecutive training sessions held at the start of the week. His absence reportedly came without prior communication, leaving the club dissatisfied as players were expected to report back for pre-season duties on schedule.
The situation has reignited discussion around Hilgers’ complicated relationship with FC Twente. The defender previously missed a significant part of last season due to a serious ACL injury, and his long recovery period has already limited his contributions on the pitch.
Reports also indicate that contractual circumstances have added another layer to the issue. His deal was automatically extended until 2027 after certain conditions in his agreement were not met, meaning he remains fully bound to the club and expected to participate in team activities.
As Hilgers continues his recovery phase and recent travel to Indonesia for rehabilitation and national team-related activities, FC Twente has emphasized that he is still required to follow club obligations. The Dutch side is now awaiting clarification from the player and plans to hold direct discussions to resolve the matter and restore clarity ahead of the new season.
