​South Africa coach Broos: We won't settle for reaching the knockout stage – everyone wants to go further

Ahead of South Africa's FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against Canada, head coach Hugo Broos said at the pre-match press conference that his side must stay focused from start to finish, warning that Canada are an extremely physical team.

On Canada
"Canada are a very physical team. They press relentlessly from the first minute until the very last. We cannot switch off for a single moment because they will constantly put us under pressure and fight for every ball. Everyone who steps onto the pitch tomorrow will be playing to win. We've already made history for South African football, but imagine how special it would be if we could beat Canada and reach the next round."

On the criticism over his squad selection
"When I selected a number of players from smaller clubs and lower divisions, many people disagreed. They believed I should have picked more stars from the biggest clubs. It wasn't until we qualified for the World Cup that people began to understand the value of the team-building approach we had taken."
On the World Cup experience

"We come from Africa, where our players rarely get the opportunity to play in international matches of this level. Tomorrow's 90 minutes will be no different from our previous games—we'll give everything we've got, put in a strong performance, and fight for the result we want to secure qualification."

On South Africa's World Cup ambitions
"We can already say that this World Cup has been a success for us. Everyone hoped and expected us to reach the knockout stage, and we've achieved that. But that doesn't mean we're satisfied or that we'll simply play tomorrow's match and go home. Once you reach the knockout stage, everyone wants to keep going and make it as far as possible."
