Ajax Targets Marc-André ter Stegen, Casting Doubt on Maarten Paes' Starting Role

Ajax Amsterdam is reportedly exploring a move for experienced goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona during the 2026 summer transfer window. If the deal is completed, the arrival of the German international could significantly increase competition for the club's number-one position and complicate Maarten Paes' path to becoming the first-choice goalkeeper.

According to reports from the Netherlands, Ajax is interested in signing Ter Stegen on a loan deal. The club views the veteran shot-stopper as the ideal candidate to strengthen its goalkeeping department because of his extensive experience, excellent ball distribution, and leadership qualities.

Ter Stegen's existing relationship with Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff is also believed to work in the club's favor. Having previously worked together at Barcelona, the two are familiar with each other, potentially making negotiations smoother if discussions move forward.

The 34-year-old spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Girona after losing his starting place at Barcelona. Despite that setback, his reputation remains strong thanks to a trophy-filled career that includes UEFA Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup titles, along with years of service for the German national team.

Neither Ajax nor Barcelona has officially confirmed the reported negotiations. However, should the transfer materialize, Maarten Paes would likely face a much tougher battle for a starting spot, with one of Europe's most accomplished goalkeepers becoming his direct competitor.
