Liverpool Agree Shock Loan Deal for Barcelona Defender Ronald Araujo
Liverpool have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan, making the Uruguay international one of the most surprising additions of the 2026 summer transfer window. The deal includes an option for Liverpool to make the move permanent for around £47.14 million, or €55 million.
Araujo is expected to travel to England for his medical before completing the transfer. The 27-year-old only extended his Barcelona contract until 2031 last year, but Liverpool's interest has led to an unexpected change in his future. If the medical is completed successfully, he will join the Reds for the 2026/27 campaign.
Liverpool's decision to pursue Araujo comes amid serious concerns over their defensive depth. Ibrahima Konate has left for Real Madrid, while Joe Gomez is dealing with a muscle injury and young defender Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL problem. With limited senior options available alongside Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool needed an experienced reinforcement.
Araujo fits the profile Liverpool require because he is primarily a centre-back but can also operate at right-back. He joined Barcelona B from Uruguay in 2018 and was promoted to the senior team the following year. Since making his first-team debut in October 2019, he has accumulated more than 200 appearances for the Catalan giants.
The loan gives Araujo an opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League while Liverpool gain immediate defensive experience without committing to a permanent transfer. If he performs consistently throughout the season, the £47 million purchase option could become an attractive route for Liverpool to secure his long-term services.
