Chelsea Abandon Renato Sanches Move as Midfield Concerns Grow

Chelsea have decided to end their pursuit of free agent Renato Sanches, closing the door on a potential move to Stamford Bridge. The Portugal international had been considered as an experienced backup option in midfield after Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City, but the club ultimately chose to rely on the players already available to manager Xabi Alonso.

The decision adds to a difficult end to Chelsea's transfer window, with previous attempts to sign Lamine Camara from Monaco and Manu Kone from Roma also failing to materialise. The lack of a new midfielder has raised concerns over squad depth, particularly after Reece James and Malo Gusto were used in midfield during the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

Sanches, now 29, had been hoping to revive his career under Alonso after leaving Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain. His time in France was disrupted by limited opportunities, with the former Benfica and Bayern Munich midfielder making only 27 appearances for PSG over the past four years while spending periods on loan at clubs in Italy, Portugal and Greece.

Chelsea had also explored the possibility of signing Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer before the experienced midfielder chose to join Al-Ittihad. With both options no longer available, the Blues have entered the season without adding another established midfielder despite the concerns surrounding their depth in that area.

Alonso remains confident that Chelsea have enough quality to compete throughout the campaign. The manager believes the existing squad provides several alternatives, although the decision to avoid another midfield signing could become increasingly important as the season progresses and the demands of multiple competitions begin to take their toll.
