Malaysia Coach Tan Cheng Hoe Admits Indonesia Are Group A Favorites

Malaysia head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has identified Indonesia as the leading contender in Group A of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. Despite recognizing Indonesia’s position, Tan believes Malaysia must remain alert against Singapore and Bangladesh, with all three opponents capable of creating difficulties during the tournament.

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup will be the first Southeast Asian tournament organized under FIFA, running from September 25 to October 5. The Division 1 competition features eight teams split into two groups, with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh placed in Group A, while Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan make up Group B.

Indonesia enter the tournament as one of the leading teams in Group A based on their FIFA ranking. Under John Herdman, the Indonesian side is viewed as a strong candidate to finish at the top of the section, while Tan believes Malaysia cannot afford to concentrate solely on their regional rivals. Singapore could provide a particularly demanding challenge because of the intense rivalry between the neighboring nations.

Bangladesh are also regarded as a team that Malaysia must take seriously, particularly with experienced coach Thomas Doley in charge. Malaysia arrive with confidence after reaching the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN Championship, a stage further than Indonesia managed in that competition after their group-stage exit.

The demanding schedule will be another important factor, with teams required to play three matches within a short period. Tan believes squad depth and effective rotation will be essential for Malaysia, while the tournament could also influence his own future as he currently serves as caretaker following the departure of Peter Cklamovski.
