Ajax Secures Experienced Midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on a Free Transfer

Ajax have officially completed the signing of Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on a free transfer. The 30-year-old joins the Dutch giants after leaving Turkish club Fenerbahce at the end of his contract, adding valuable experience and strength to an Ajax midfield that has recently undergone significant changes.

The arrival of Amrabat is expected to fill the defensive midfield role previously occupied by Jordan Henderson. Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff considers the Moroccan an ideal addition because of his physical presence, technical ability and extensive international experience. His familiarity with Dutch football should also help him settle quickly, while his leadership could prove particularly useful for a squad containing several promising young players.

Amrabat brings an impressive European football background to Amsterdam. Born in the Netherlands, he developed his career through clubs including FC Utrecht, Feyenoord, Club Brugge and Fiorentina before experiencing spells at Manchester United and Fenerbahce. He also spent last season on loan at Real Betis and has earned 78 international appearances for Morocco, giving Ajax a player with considerable experience at both club and international level.

His signing also provides Ajax with greater depth in a position that had become increasingly important. The club had been relying heavily on Youri Regeer as a defensive midfielder, but his expected loan move to Werder Bremen would have left another gap in the squad. Amrabat had already been in regular communication with Ajax since April, while discussions with Cruyff and head coach Michel Sanchez helped convince him that the Amsterdam project was the right move for the next stage of his career.

Amrabat is now preparing for his first appearance in an Ajax shirt, with a potentially demanding debut against defending champions PSV at the Johan Cruyff ArenA. Although he has not played a competitive match recently, the midfielder believes he is physically ready after maintaining his fitness through individual training. Ajax will hope his arrival can bring stability, defensive strength and experience to the heart of their midfield as they prepare for the new season.
